About Gloucester RSL Sub-Branch

RETURNED AND SERVICES LEAGUE OF AUSTRALIA

What we know as The Returned & Services League of Australia was formed in 1916 in response to the lack of a unified approach to the organisation of repatriation facilities and medical services by Government for those returning from World War 1.

Initially called The Returned Sailors and Soldiers Imperial League of Australia (RSSILA) and then in 1940, the Returned Sailors’, Soldiers’ and Airmen’s Imperial League of Australia (RSSAILA) before becoming the Returned Services League of Australia (RSL), the RSL is a company limited by guarantee.

Since its formation, RSL Australia has evolved to be the nation’s largest Ex-Service Organisation. Representing approximately 150,000 members the league operates through a National structure with State and Territory Branches and 1,135 Sub-Branches.

While the name may have changed over the years, the objectives remain unchanged, although have necessarily evolved over that time to meet the needs of each generation of servicemen and women.
